There are currently two LNG import terminals in the Netherlands. These are located at Maasvlakte, Rotterdam and at Eemshaven, Groningen. Both terminals are operated by other parties. With the construction of a new LNG import terminal near Vlissingen, VTTI and Höegh EVI want to improve the various ways and security of supply of energy in the Netherlands, as well as eventually play a pioneering role in the transition to clean energy carriers, such as hydrogen and ammonia. Thus, this project fulfills the energy needs of today and builds the bridge to a clean and sustainable energy supply for future generations.
About the procedure
The central government coordinates the decision-making process for energy projects of national importance. This is why the project procedure (formerly known as the National Coordination Regulation (RCR)) applies to the licensing of this terminal. This means that the Minister of Climate Policy and Green Growth and the Minister of Interior and Kingdom Relations act as the competent authority. VTTI and Höegh EVI are the joint initiators of this project with VTTI having the lead role in this project procedure. The first phase in this procedure is a Notice of Intent and Engagement Plan.
Thinking along or participating
The initiators believe it is important that everyone can contribute to the plans for this terminal in order to achieve a better project. Therefore, as soon as the procedure has officially started (expected first quarter 2025), we are inviting local residents, businesses, civil society organizations, governing bodies and other interested parties to participate.
