VTTI enters renewable natural gas business with acquisition of bioenergy project in Tilburg, the Netherlands
An important step in VTTI’s new energy strategy
VTTI today announces its acquisition of a bioenergy project located on an industrial site in Tilburg, the Netherlands, from Re-N Technology Group Ltd. Following the acquisition VTTI will construct a new state-of-the-art bioenergy facility of industrial scale and is foreseen to be commissioned in the third quarter of 2023.
The new facility will have a nominal capacity of 17 megawatts and will generate, among others, 23 million cubic metres of biogas per year by processing organic waste and side streams in an anaerobic digestion process. A part of the biogas will be upgraded to renewable natural gas (RNG) which will be delivered to the grid, thereby contributing to decarbonise the Dutch energy sector. RNG carries significant GHG (greenhouse gas) saving properties that can also be harnessed as an effective transportation fuel. A portion of the RNG produced will be utilised to provide power to the facility and as heat to further process the waste outputs from the facility to produce organic fertilisers, which are essential for regenerative farming.
Rob Nijst, CEO VTTI, says: “VTTI is taking an exciting new step, by entering the renewable natural gas business. The acquisition of a bioenergy project in Tilburg, in the Netherlands, is a landmark for our company. It fits perfectly with our ongoing strategy to diversify our product portfolio, and to work actively towards renewable energy solutions.”
